The chase is on

Nine o’clock. Closing time.

The library was already empty. Fifteen minutes before she could officially lock up, Heather made the rounds, checking the computer lab, the tables in the back, the high-reaching stacks.

As she did, she stifled a yawn. Between nightmares about crazed shifters chasing her and that sexy man from the bar doing unmentionable things to her in her dreams, Heather hadn’t slept so well last night. And while she thought Saturday might finally be her day off, that plan got shot to shit when Penelope called, begging her to take the closing shift again.

Not like she could say no. The money from picking up another shift could always come in handy and, since Avery was pulling a day shift at the store where she worked, it wasn’t like they had any concrete plans. She might as well go in to the library.

Of course, she was beginning to regret it as soon as it dawned on her that she was all alone, it was late, it was dark, and despite it being half past nine when she finally left the library, it seemed as if half of Spring Valley was already fast asleep.

And some of her old friends wondered why she’d rather head into Grayson for the nightlife. In Spring Valley, there was no nightlife.

Ah, well. Between the psychic on Thursday and her trip to the bar last night, she was looking forward to a cozy night at home with her sister where she wouldn’t have to worry about things she couldn’t really control anyway.

She had barely taken three steps off the curb when she heard it. A howl. A freaking howl that split through the dark sky, sending shivers down her spine, the little hairs on the back of her neck standing straight as the tail of the howl echoed into nothingness.

Heather froze, her fight or flight reaction on hold as she wondered what the hell she should do. Run back inside of the library and hide or bolt toward her car and hope she didn’t run into whatever made that sound?

She didn’t really have a choice.

If she went back into the library after she locked up, she’d have to struggle with the trio of locks out front, disengage the alarm, and then explain to the head librarian why the system had clocked her at going back in after she’d already punched out for the night. And what would she say? That she got frightened by a… a howl? Spring Valley was a small town, but it was basically a suburb off of Grayson. They were more than two hours away from the Eastern Pack, and even further from the closest Bumptown. It wasn’t wolf country, and it wasn’t shifter land, either.

Janice would think Heather was being overworked. And maybe she was. She’d covered Penelope’s full shift Friday and half her shift tonight in addition to her own work week. Add that to how little sleep she’d gotten since her evening trip to see that psychic and Heather wouldn’t be surprised if she was hallucinating.
